Instructional Focus

PS 770 operates using an open classroom concept with a team teaching approach.  Each grade is comprised of a cohort of students who loop together with their teachers for 2 or 3 years (not Pre K).  Each cohort is lead by a teaching team of 3 or 4 teachers that focus on ensuring sound instructional practice for the students and building strong relationships with students and parents/guardians.

Each team has 100 minutes of weekly collaborative time to vet lessons, analyze student data, meet with parents, discuss students, plan curriculum, and view recorded lessons using the lens of instructional rounds.  In addition to the weekly 155 minutes, each teacher team engages in 50 minutes of weekly reflective practice using a reflective protocol and 55 minutes of parent engagement time.

All new faculty members  engage in learning around reflective listening and understand Myers-Briggs Personality Profiles. This allows teams to learn to communicate and collaborate more effectively and deepen the understanding of all team members.

We focus on a social/emotional initiative using Love and Logic and RULER.

Testimonials

"Your innovative efforts at The New American Academy are helping to build a brighter future and will serve as a terrific example for other schools." - President Bill Clinton

"The New American Academy in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York, is creating a powerful, compelling model of what a public school in the new knowledge economy should be. Built on a foundation of teacher collaboration and professional reflection, TNAA is a wonderful place of learning for kids precisely because of its culture of trust and caring."  - Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers

"Innovative classroom structure allows for in-depth exploration on one topic."  - Inside Schools

"The principal, Jessica Saranovsky, was one of the first "master teachers" at Shimon Waronker's brave experiment in team-taught 60-kid giant classrooms, and by all accounts she's smart, hands-on, and super-accessible. If you're considering the school for pre-K or kindergarten next year, it's time to get on the ball and go check it out."  - the Q at Parkside

"By insisting on constant informal contact and by preserving that contact year after year, The New American Academy has the potential to create richer, mentorlike or even familylike relationships for students who are not rich in those things." - The New York Times
